Guest Biography

DJ Hollywood, also known as Hollywood, is considered the “Father” of the Hip Hop style. He was the first rapper to perform in the hip-hop style and made significant contributions to DJing by creating a set that included singing, rhyming, and call and response. He is credited for popularizing phrases like “throw ya hands in the air and wave ’em like you just don’t care.” Hollywood began DJing in 1972, and in 1975, he made his greatest contribution to the hip-hop style by adapting the lyrics of Isaac Hayes’s “Good Love 6-9969” to the breakdown part of MFSB’s “Love is the Message” and creating a continuous rhyme, introducing “flow” and giving birth to the hip-hop style. In 1978 and 1979, Hollywood was the first DJ to bring turntables and a mixer to perform at the Apollo Theater. He was a successful DJ until the mid-1980s, but struggled with drug addiction and retired from the business. He has since returned to performing in the New York City area.
